Malta- Europe’s Most Underrated Country?

Greetings from Malta. After only spending a few days here, I think this country is a gem and not at all over-touristy. Here are a few reasons to visit:

  1. It is cheaper than most of Western Europe.  After coming from Switzerland I felt like I was in South America. Our first lunch was $5.00 per person.  The buses are plentiful and shuttle you around everywhere.
  2. Most of the population speaks English. You can thank 150 years of protection from the U.K for this (as well as driving on the left side of the road and pints of beer at bars).
  3. The locals are extremely friendly. Seriously, if you ask a question for directions they will go out of their way to walk and point things out until you are sure of your whereabouts.
  4. The architecture: Malta has to be one of best preserved small countries in the world. All over the island feel like you are walking back in time with beautiful old structures and it is even home to one of the oldest remaining human built structures in the world (Hagar Qim).
  5. The weather: warm and breezy every single day.
  6. The beaches: From top to bottom this island is full of them. This is heaven for lovers of pebbles on their beaches (although sand beaches do exist).

Have you visited Malta? What did you think of it? Where do you recommend people stay?
